The Analects Of Confucius (Norton Paperback)

The Analects of Confucius (Norton Paperback)

Product Description

In this terse, brilliant translation, Simon Leys restores the human dimension to Confucius. He emerges a full-blooded character with a passion for politics and a devotion to the ideals of a civilization he saw in decline. Leyss Notes draw Confucius into conversation with the great thinkers of the Western tradition. In all, this volume provides new readers the perfect introduction to a classic work.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Granted, I havent read other translations of the Analects, so my rating is for the book itself more than as a comparison to other translations.

The fact that Confucius lived thousands of years ago is amazing to me ... the things he says apply to people throughout the ages, and theyre full of wisdom. Having read the book, I find myself trying to be a bit more of a Confucian gentleman than I did before reading it. Confucius teachings about humanity and being a gentleman span across the ages.

Im very glad I read this book. The only reason I didnt give the book 5 stars is because I cant compare it to other translations, and it seems a little improper to rate a translated book without comparing it to other translations. But I personally found Leys lines to be easily understandable and interesting, even if I have no way of ascertaining their accuracy with the original text.

Readable, useful, rewarding
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
Those who complain about this translation being "uninspired" are missing the forest for the trees. Leys rendition of the Analects is a modern, useful, and enjoyable read. The translation flows well and makes sense, and the authors comments are interesting and avoid being scholarly tripe.

Confucius himself would agree that the purpose of his teaching was not to inspire linguistic debate, but to lead the recipient to right action. This book does the latter and avoids the former, and thereby gets my unqualified recommendation. No matter your religious leanings, if you read this book and put it into practice, youll grow into a more human person. As this was the Masters entire point, Id say this translation is a success.

I cant read Confucius in the original so I really cant speak to the accuracy of Simon Leys translation (or should we use his actual name - Pierre Ryckmans?). But without a doubt he feels it is the standard against which all others should be measured, as he constantly passes judgment in his Notes section on all who have gone before and finds each generally lacking in some way. Add to that his efforts to impress the reader with the breadth of his literary knowledge and his decidedly conservative social comments (another reviewer also commented on his anti-gay bias) and Im left with a translation I would just as soon skip.
Servant Leadership Chinese Style!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :6
The importance of the historical use and misuse of the teaching of Confucius throughout the centuries in China can hardly be understated. While Confucian thought was on the outs with Communist intellectuals, others such as Lee Kwan Yew of Singapore point to Confucius principles as the secret to the Asian economic tigers success. Leys, the translator of this volume, notes that Chinese familiarity and historical misuse of Confucius prejudices many, but taken without these prejudices, Confucius is thoroughly modern in his application today.

Confucius is known for being a great teacher, but it was politics and government that was his passion. Today, Confucius is a good source for leadership philosophy. Far from promoting authoritarian despotism, the teachings of Confucius point to a higher calling of leadership through service, character development, and self-abandonment - all sorely lacking in Chinese leadership today.

To learn was Confucius calling. He said he did not have much innate knowledge and studied literature and history to learn (6.27). The responsibility of learning was on the learner not the teacher: "I enlighten only the enthusiastic I guide only the fervent. After I have lifted up one corner of a question, if the student cannot discover the other three, I do not repeat" (7.8). While that may sound harsh, Confucius practiced what he preached. "Put me in the company of any two people at random-they will invariably have something to teach me. I can take their qualities as a model and their defects as a warning" (7.22).

Learning was to be put into practice this showed integrity. The first verse of the Analects says, "To learn something new and then to put it into practice at the right time: is this not a joy?" (1.1). Again, "Learning is like a chase in which, as you fail to catch up, you fear to lose what you have already gained" (8.17). Here we see the high value of action resulting from learning and not only study. He valued doing what you say. "There was a time when I used to listen to what people said and trusted that they would act accordingly, but now I listen to what they say and watch what they do" (5.10). Doing what you say is the heart of personal integrity. "A gentleman would be ashamed should his deeds not match his words" (14.27).

Learning was his way of improving himself in order to govern well. Three major themes surface in Confucius teaching regarding those who govern: be a gentleman, keep the rites and maintain your humanity. A gentleman was a moral superior, someone worthy of leading. A person becomes a gentleman not through birthright but through learning and right actions. These actions are called ritual, which is similar to courteous behavior, and maintaining humanity which is treating people with respect, dignity, fairness, justice and generosity to name a few of the qualities that Confucius praises. Ritual and humanity develop character in a person, and a person with character is the one whom Confucius calls a gentleman.

Confucius and his contemporary political and intellectual leaders wanted to make a name for themselves. In a way, they could live on through that reputation. "The Master said: A gentleman worries lest he might disappear from this world without having made a name for himself" (15.20). However, in making a name a leader must not do evil or act without virtue.

Official position was an obvious choice for ruling and making a name. Today, position is the most highly regarded form of authority all over Asia. Hear Confucius: "Do not worry if you are without a position worry lest you do not deserve a position" (4.14). Again, "It is not your obscurity that should distress you, but your incompetence" (14.30). This is a powerful lesson for Chinese leaders to hear. Today too much emphasis is placed on leadership position, and not enough placed on competence and character. The results are personal empires, corruption, and incompetence that oppress those without power (position). "Before he gets his position, his only fear is that he might not get it, and once he gets it, his only fear is that he might lose it. And when he fears to lose it, he becomes capable of anything" (17.15).

The wisdom available to contemporary readers goes on and on. I found this book extremely helpful for finding ancient Chinese cultural leadership principles that back up the principles of transformational leadership theory and servant leadership theory. I would like to read and reflect deeper to find Confucian principles that are not yet apart of contemporary models of leadership, but are consistent with it. This is a deeper task.

Recently I have begun quoting Confucius during my leadership seminars. Although, a feel a bit dubious doing so - proof texting largely Western leadership principles with Confucius - the reaction from the participants has been enthusiastic. While many leaders are attracted to Western leadership theories, many also feel these theories are foreign. Many theories based on egalitarian social structure are foreign and are not appropriate for most cultures in Asia. However, some theories, working inside hierarchical social structures, are helpful but still smack of American "one, two, three" optimism. We are sometimes too brash and not mysterious enough, too left brained, in our presentations. Confucius has helped my audiences to embrace the principles I try to get across.

I was surprised how readable, useful and contemporary the writing of Confucius is to me as a leadership consultant. He had a good grasp of humankind, and set the bar very high regarding how leaders should govern from character and justice. He encouraged people to higher traits of humanity, that if followed would make the world a much better place. We would do well to study and apply the teachings of Confucius.

One of only two things Ive ever went to the trouble to return to Amazon.com. I bought this translation because it was recommended in "Confucius Lives Next Door". Unfortunately, Mr. "Leys" goes out of his way to be homophobic in his footnotes. Ive heard a lot of adjectives used to describe minority groups in my lifetime, especially since I live in the Midwest but "grim" is a new one (page 126). I am surprised that such a progressive company such as Amazon sells a book that incites such negativity about a minority group. Can anyone recommend a professional translation?

    The Annals Of Lu Buwei

    The Annals of Lu Buwei

    Product Description

This is the first complete English translation of Lshi chunqiu, compiled in 239 b. c. under the patronage of L Buwei, prime minister to the ruler of the state of Qin, who was to become the first emperor of a newly unified China fifteen years later. L retained a group of scholars whose aim was to encompass the worlds knowledge in one great encyclopedia so delighted was L with the finished work that he is said to have offered a fabulous prize of gold to anyone who could add or subtract even a single word.

An exceptionally rich and comprehensive compendium, The Annals of L Buwei recounts in engaging, straightforward, and readable prose the great variety of beliefs and customs of its time. The work is one of the great monuments of Chinese thinking, a work of originality and cohesion, inspired by a vision of a universal empire ruled by principles that ensured harmony between man and nature, protective of human and animal life, devoted to learning and culture, practicing benevolence and kindness, and motivated by reason and morality.

In addition to revealing an advanced state of technical knowledge, the Annals set forth a philosophy of government suitable to the centralized control that the Qin state would subsequently establish. It also took into account every philosophical trend of the day, sometimes adapting themes, sometimes combining ideas that had not previously been associated, sometimes rejecting and refuting positions that were in conflict with its basic vision. Because L aimed at comprehensiveness, his work preserved a number of systems of thought that are otherwise unknown or scarcely known. The Annals thus provides an essential tool for anyone seeking to reconstruct the philosophical controversies of the third century b. c. At the same time, Ls compendium proclaims his independent, highly original philosophical positions. Today, with most of the works of classical Chinese philosophy long lost, The Annals of L Buwei remains indispensable as a summa of the Chinese intellectual world of its time.

For those a little more advanced, the Preface and Introduction will prove to be extremely helpful (as the library reviews indicate). For advanced students, the translators have included the literary Chinese based on the critical edition--in traditional characters, in an easily readable script. One can only wish that we could have scholarly works like this (i.e., accessible even by beginners) for other Warring States texts, particularly the Zhang Guo Ce, XunZi, MoZi, etc.

Slingerlands translation of Confucius Analects is a helpful addition to the current literature on the subject. Destined to be used for college student, Slingerland gathers a number of traditional commentaries on each translated verse as well as giving a helpful glossary of Chinese terms and names of person referred in the text. While I personally would prefer D.C. Laus translation, Slingerlands prose is quite good and less cumbersome than Ames and Rogermonts philosophical translation. This is a helpful introduction to Confucian thought for English-language reader.

New York Citys Lower East Side has always attracted bohemian freaks looking to shock the world, but with EVOL (Love spelled backwards)--their third album after a live tape and several EPs--Sonic Youth finally figured a way to make their skronk count. Combining alternate guitar tunings with nearly linear songwriting, SY proved they could harness their energy into a combustible engine. The multititled closer, "Expressway to Yr. Skull" (or "Madonna, Sean, and Me"), is pure apocalyptic beauty, while "Shadow of a Doubt" succeeds by being more subdued and suggestive. --Rob OConnor

This has been my first experience of Sonic Youth -- obviously very much after the fact but so what? Well, this is quite harsh and unrelenting stuff. Im sure its first rate in its genre, but I was put off by the consistently aggressive, discordant sound.

Its possible to admire some music without ever feeling the need to listen to it. For me, Evol is very much in that category. No doubt that makes me a philistine.

Meanwhile, look around this web page and you will see very little effort among the customer reviewers to provide a balanced critique of Evol. Its 5 stars, as usual, as far as the eye can see.

While perhaps not a document with the epic scope of Daydream Nation, the grunge sheen of Dirty, or the simplicity and clarity of their self-titled debut album, EVOL for me is Sonic Youth at their finest. It is filthy, frightening, noisy, startling, bizarre, and filled with amazing soundz within. My first exposure to the music off of this album was the cassette single for "Star Power" which had "Bubblegum" as the b-side. Certainly the two most accessible rockers off the album, they still resonate with me to this day when I want some skewered rock nroll. There are certainly some tunes on EVOL that others might consider filler (In the Kingdom #19 Im sure would have a Jonas Brothers fan running to the eject button faster than you could say DISNEY!), but with landmark songs like "Shadow of a Doubt" and "Expressway to Yr Skull" present, it doesnt really matter. Paired together, these are two of the most haunting songs the band has ever recorded. They represent, I think, a defining moment for Sonic Youth. They had positioned themselves in a place in the American music scene where they could create something unique, unheard of, and yes, lasting. Combined with Sister and Daydream Nation that followed it, EVOL was such a landmark, that these three albums alone solidified Sonic Youth as the definitive American band of the 1980s. The Kalifornia Girlz never stood a chance.

    Sonic Youth-EVOL

Is it any coincidence that the title of the record, EVOL is love spelled backwards, knowing Thurston Moore the answer chances are is a solid yes.

On the bands third record EVOL they opted for a change and a great one at that. Ditching the assumed motto of "noise over quality" for "a little quality would be nice..." the band proved they were original and willing to risk and strike for new ground. While their early work was clearly inspired by the Velvet Underground they never lost that influence but augmented it rather.

EVOL brings the poetic lyrics into a actual song structure (sort of) and discovers a new tool called melody, something that Lee Ronaldo would in time master. While the lyrics are at times trite (Madonna, Sean and Me though very entertaining) and at times bubblegum (Bubblegum) they do bubblegum very well. Yes the pun was intended.

But the thing about EVOL is you dont realize the progress until the very end of the album when you are aware that Lee Ronaldo, Kim Gordon, and Steve Shelley are in the band along with Thurston Moore as well, and when that realization is reached it is like a door has been opened and there is a whole world of possibilities through the exit.
    overflowing with emotion...
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :13
This is not simply a "touching" album that suggests a mood. EVOL grips on from the very beginning, turns you upside down and immerses you in a somber, dark world that no other album can create. And it will keep you coming back for more and more.

The haunting guitars of the opener "Tom Violence" only hint at what is to come. "Shadow of a Doubt" is perhaps the best SY song with Gordon on vocals her whisper backed by a sudden assault of noise sends chills up your spine. "In the Kingdom #19" (listen for Thurston throwing fireworks in the studio after one minute) and "Secret Girls" are abrasive, ethereal tracks that may take more than one listen to appreciate, but are among the bands best. The heralded closer "Expressway to Yr Skull (The Crucifixion of Sean Penn)" is an epic journey, beginning with Thurstons unforgettable cry "Were gonna kill the California girls," building to a frantic pace and then slowing down into a spacious wall of noise.

This is SY at their height lyrically. Daydream Nation may have more "masterpieces" of feedback but EVOL leaves more of an impression. Each song has its own way of leaving you breathless, and its clear that after the 39 minute adventure Sonic Youth has to be one of the greatest bands of our time, if ever.

A wonderful vision that unfortunately became too blurred for its own good
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :3
Sonic Youth have long been viewed the most innovative band of the 1980s owing to their use of unique guitar tunings that have been seen as reinvigorating guitar-based music against the competition of what is now viewed as vapid synth-pop.

Although I have occasionally in the past been tempted to listen to their songs from my brothers record collection, I always saw their work as nothing different from the dreadful punk/pop that turned me decisively away from the radio during the 1990s. Their most acclaimed albums Daydream Nation and Sister, listed in best-ofs by Joe S. Harrington and David Keenan respectively, fall prey far too often to cliched punk/pop to rival such later masterworks as Love Agenda and Spiderland. Though one can discern from those albums that Sonic Youth had a quite unique vision of rock that would be developed by the post-rockers of the 1990s, on those albums they sound far too much like a band not clear what it wants to be.

Before Sister, Sonic Youth have been viewed as "barely competent". In fact, their limited skills on "EVOL" actually suit the vision of re-inventing guitar rock much better than the pop sensibility that came to take over their music after this. The tone, rather than being the messy punk/pop that has annoyed me on all other recordings by them I have heard, is much quieter yet equally harsh (which, I confess, is what I have grown to admire). "Tom Violence" and "Shadow of a Doubt" are truly wonderful in their slow-burning passion that manages somehow to be produced with a delicacy never seen on any other Sonic Youth album. Even when on the former the band does go into a freak-out, it manages to be put together perfectly.

"Green Light" is a little more accessible but avoid the cliches of Hsker D, whilst the piano-based "Secret Girls" is a wonderful departure that only confirms "EVOL"s role as an immediate early post-rock influence. The epic "Madonna, Sean and Me" (aka "Expressway to Your Skull") is almost as effective, and even "Marilyn Moore" with its spoken-word vocals is far from bad.

However, "In the Kingdom #19", "Death to Our Friends" and "Bubblegum" rather let down what would otherwise be a masterpiece with their too-generic pop/punk rhythms.

Still, "EVOL" stands as the one place where an undoubtedly unique vision is in any way unclattered by pop/punk ambitions that were far greater than most listeners believe or want to. Its sound is totally unique and at times, really startling. Worth owning, too, as a precursor to the vital 1990s post-rock movement.

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
Pinning Sister as a second best record really undermines the fact that it is a great record and not just the alternative to the obvious. While this is not an obvious record, like most albums by Sonic Youth, it is still immediately recognizable as a true classic of its decade, virtually refining noise-rock and displaying Sonic Youths songwriting ability and truly monumental style. Perhaps the comparison is made because Sister is not quite as ambitious or relentless as Daydream Nation, but in any case it is just about as enjoyable in terms of good songs and the overall result. What Sonic Youth does with undeniable success is rain the easygoing nature of American youth into a single album which does its damage with great consistency. At some points the album feels like the soundtrack to a quick weekend trip through rural America with your buddies, and to me that is represented by the cover pretty well. Sometimes this album is soft, with the wonderful Schizophrenia and the appropriately titled soft/hard noise of Tuff Gnarl. And sometimes it is great punk with choice numbers such as Catholic Block and Hot Wire My Heart. The album gets more rocking as it goes along and is very abrasive and by all means not a softie, and the only one song goes over the five minute mark, making it feel more listenable to the casual fan and easier to swallow, making this a good place to start. A noise rock landmark that not only deserves respect but demands it.

Although I certainly prefer my Sonic Youth a little further down the line, this could be considered good quality early work, when the band had begun to master sculpting their signature eruptions of guitar distortions into greater beings then themselves. The playing and recording is appropriately sloppy, though more often then not genuine power still shines through.

WHen someone tells me they never saw the big deal with Sonic Youth I always throw on Sister. Yeah, I know Daydream is great but I always thought this was their masterpiece. It put both their musicianship and recording prowess together in one disk.

Sister was recorded on old tube boards and you can really tell by the soft tones and warm fuzz. Feels like a wish coming true.

The guy from "Sad Young Man On a Train," an incredible band, worked at Olssons Records in Alexandria (VA) when this came out, and recommended it to me wholeheartedly. Probably the best recommendation I ever had, an absolutely incredible, unique album (and I got the huge "human size " Sister poster too!).

I went back to Olssons a year later and asked the guy about "Daydream Nation," and he said, shaking his head, "Theyve sold out."!! I dont agree with that, but to me Daydream Nation is a little more "mainstream," and the following LPs "Goo," "Dirty" and etc. are worth listening to, but I dont feel the need to hold on to them. "Sister" to me was Sonic Youths peak.
I wish I could appreciate this more...

Although I have had a stereotyped view of "alternative" music for many years, Sonic Youth have undoubtedly been (close to) the most acclaimed band of the past 25 years, with David Keenan viewing this album as the best of the 1980s. "janitor-x"s viewpoint of Isnt Anything and Loveless and pale imitations of Sonic youth eventually made me want to check them out even though - from my brothers record collection - I had found them unlistenable more than once in the past because of the seemingly tuneless guitar noise.

EVOL, however, contained a number of very impressive songs that were, as "janitor-x" said, very soft, and I expected more in that direction when I purchased "Sister". Apart from "Schizophrenia" ad "Pipeline/Kill Time", however, there is little of what I had hoped for. Rather, the songs here are like so much awful punk/pop that came to dominate the radio around a decade after I was born, only with much more guitar feedback. Even "Tuff Gnarl", which for a time almost reminded me of one of the 1990s best songs, "Storm", actually turns out to be guitar feedback with much less emotion than I had hoped for. "White Cross", in particular, seems to be a song that paved the way for an incredible amount of terrible pop-punk during the 1990s and beyond. It has none of the qualities I found on listening form my brothers record collection. "Catholic Block" and "Beauty Lies In The Eye" do not lack melody but the vocals really ruin them because there is so little energy or drama in them - which simply does not fit the music. Maybe I was in the wrong mood to appreciate this record when I bought it - I somehow enjoyed EVOL much more.

Whilst I have definite respect for Sonic Youth - as so many reputable writers have shown they did a great deal to pave the way for some great music in the 1990s that revived the passion in rock - "Sister", at least as I judged it, is simply an impossible record for me to listen to. The guitar feedback really, as I see it, is almost analogous to the extremely glossy production of so many more mainstream bands of the 1980s that I once liked but now hate. Both can actually achieve a great deal used wisely, but more often than not, they disguise a lack of emotion in the playing.

The ageless Sonic Youth return with a new, yet familiar, excursion into their own particular brand of ultra-amplified, dissonant rock. The quartets CD A Thousand Leaves evokes fond memories of yesteryears noisy, now-classic, avant-garde approach, while retaining snippets of traditional pop elements heard on several of their previous major-label releases. As Sonic Youths music has gained a larger audience, theyve preserved doses of the crunched melody and meandering structure that has always been their trademark. The new release sounds relatively unabashed, with wandering songs like "Female Mechanic Now on Duty" spewing extended barrages of feedback and Kim Gordons dry, unsettling scowls at the listener. Look deeper, however, and theres a quiet resonance among the racket, with tracks like "Sunday" and "Snare, Girl" making use of Thurston Moores cooler vocal tone and jagged, cascading guitar passages. --Matthew Cooke

Quite superb, if only for songwriting/production triumphs like "Wildflower Soul" and "Hits of Sunshine." Outside of several gorgeously encapsulated songs, the albums entire structure practically shakes with creative energy.

Part of an essential trilogy with "Washing Machine" and "NYC Ghosts & Flowers."
The music sounds just like the color of the album cover.

It took me a little while to really get into this, but once I did I just couldnt take this masterpiece out of my cd player. All the songs have like a little weird twist to them, like dejavu notes or melodies you swear you have heard before in your mind. Kim Gordons singing is pretty good too, at first it might seem like shes just screaming whatever she thinks of but keep listening and it will be very rewarding.

Another masterpiece in the Sonic Youth catalouge. Here the band keeps their avant style leaving behind the pop stylings of Dirty and Goo, and continue with Washing Machine songs. As an SY fan knows though every album is much different than any other, so this of course has its own unique.

The standout track is definatley "Sunday" with perfect Thurston vocals. Lee keeps up his spoken word masterpieces that always ring true. And the sometimes hit or miss Kim Gordon is in top riot grrl form blasting away on "Female Mechanic".

I remember when this album came out. I had been a huge Sonic Youth fan for years and I ran to Mod Lang in Berkeley to buy it the day it was released. I brought it home, put it on, and desperately tried to like it. But I just couldnt. SY had always had a penchant for strectching out their feedback experiments into sprawling, fasinating compositions, but here it all just seemed to melt down into a pointless noise crusade. There are a few high points, but mostly I just find myself thinking, "there is no way this song deserves to be nine minutes long." The slide continued on the next record, but fortunately they got it together again on "Murry Street" and have been putting out great stuff ever since.

I was looking forward to Turandot at the Met with Domingo! Disappointment often follows anticipation. The set was truly outstanding, the grandeur of the era was displayed. This performance is over 20 years old Domingo was in his prime - a tenor hunk! But the magic, the chemistry between him and Marton was lacking. The one who stole the show was Liu - Leona Mitchell. A voice of an angel, innocent and full of emotion. The entire opera lacked believability. The story itself is unbelievable, so it takes a master director to make the audience be transported to China to witness this love story. It was the first time I have even seen Calaf sing Nessum Dorma seated! He looked very uncomfortable. Marton was truly an ice goddess but even when she realized then end result, she was cold. This was also reflected in her voice.

Wheres Cecil Beaton when you need him. When you have the greatest singers of the last half of the 20th century, Nilsson and Corelli, you dont need all this excess! The Met has toned this production down shortly after this broadcast. This production is so busy I hardly even noticed the singing. Youll find every thing you need on the stage but a basket ball court.

I hate Zefirelli, he is extremely kitsch to my taste. I hate MET productions because I think they are usually too conventional to my taste. Then, why I am giving to this Turandot 5 stars? Well I do not have a rational answer to that question. I have to confess that these 5 stars come from the depths of my heart and have nothing to do with my brains. I really love Turandot, I think this is Puccini at his best, moving dangerously close to that thin line that separates the sublime from the bad taste, but always moving on the sublime side. Therefore you need an extremely intelligent stage director that would avoid crossing that line to the kitch side. Curiosly Zefirelli succeed doing that!!!! I never thougth that Zefirelli was that inteligent!!! I love Placido Domingo, I think he enhances every opera in which he sings and this Turandot is not an exception. I always have serious difficulties following the line of Turandots parts and hate that particular spinto way of singing used by most sopranos that sing this role. However Eva Marton does an extraordinary job here. Indeed she instills some sweetness into this rather cold role. The scene of the three riddles in the second act is impecable. The acting of both, Marton and Domingo, is legendary to say the less. You feel the tension and the anguish of the characters on stage. Liona Mitchell is beautiful and delicate in her impersonation of Liu. The scene of her death in the third act is particularly moving. The action all through the opera goes fast paced thanks to the phenomenal singers/actors, the stage director and James Levine great (as always) musical direction. Fully recommended. This is a completely unbiased appreciation of this wonderful opera and production since I watched it, in the first place, with the sick intention of critizicing it badly.

Scotto- The Queen of the Night
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :2
This production was filmed live at the met in 1977 and its an affecting one.
I had seen Renata Scotto perform as Musetta in another production with Carreras and that performance was quite memorable so i really looked forward to seeing her as Mimi.
Scotto performs from the soul and from the heart and its a very moving experience to hear and see her perform.
Her singing is so poetic with such sensitive artful display of dynamics to convey the words she is singing.
This is a performance not about ego but about art.
Theres a moment in the final scene when shes in bed and everybody has left and she slowly rises with such fragile strain out of the bed to stand and its simply heartbreaking.
    Bravo Ms. Scotto.
You bring tears to my eyes.
Pavarotti starts the opera concentrating mainly on vocal technical delivery then starts to assert himself emotionally in the part.
The golden tone and technique is there in full display and he does an admirable job at acting as well.
I dont think that hes the most artful of tenors and what i mean by that is that he could add more meaning to the text by phrasing more and using a wider array of dynanics more often.
If you listen and watch Scottos portrayel then you can clearly see the difference in levals of artistry.
This takes nothing away from the great tone and technique that he had but merely states that the performance though very fine could be improved upon musically and dramatic wise.
See Carlo Bergonzi who may not have the golden tone of Pavarotti or the power to hit high cs like pavarotti but made up for that with a more complete artistic delivery of their character.
The rest of the cast is fine even though Marcello (Wixell) is somewhat bland in his portrayel and could use a little more expressiveness acting and vocal wise and Musetta (Niska) could have been more bombastic especially in the scene at the restaurant.
The stage production is pleasing to the eye though not as extravagant as something produced by say Franco Zeffirelli.
These are just a few criticisms on a performance that is very satisfying on the whole with a restored picture that is slightly grainy but totally acceptable.
The crowd is a most loving crowd as they go nuts at the end of musettas waltz as well as most of the highlights.
So if youre looking for a dvd Boheme then this quality production will do the trick but be prepared to cry as you experience the grand artistry of Renata Scotto.

I found every detail of this production to be unimprovable. True, the film is old and grainy and sometimes slightly blurry. But it doesnt matter. The casting and vocals are unbeatable. Im so glad to have seen Pavarotti in this role and in his prime, when he fully committed to everything with his whole being rather than just vocally doing so. He is superb (though he wobbles on the High C in "che gelida manina"), as is the rest of the cast. But the biggest revelation for me was Scotto. I grew up seeing her as Musetta on the other Met Boheme, and never really understood her following. Thank goodness I saw this. Her performance is something I cannot shake. It has an emotional depth to it that fits perfectly with her vocal choices - she crushed me. "Senza rancor" is the highlight of the night - I had to rewind it a few times. This is an ideal DVD to show non-opera people. I cant imagine not being swept into its magic!

This DVD performance has a way of drawing you into the story so that you feel that youre on the stage with the performers. The singing and acting are superb but the quality of the recording is deficient. Camera angles and framing detract from the total enjoyment. Lighting is poor and obscure. If you want the feeling of sitting in the balcony watching the opera, this is for you. I, for one, dont want to be distracted by seeing more than whats happening on stage. Granted, the video/audio technology of the time is nothing compared to what we have today, but the amateurish camera work is independent of that. The performance deserved better treatment.

Customer ReviewsThe production can make or break an opera...
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :2
While this is a delightful opera, I felt that the production was lacking in many ways. For one thing, Cecilia Bartoli does not look at all as Cinderella should. Mostly because she is obviously overweight, its hard to see why the prince is SO captivated by her appearance. The prince himself did not look half as handsome (or young) as Prince Charming should, although I could forgive these small faults if those were my only objections to this recording. I realize that Raul Giminez and Cecilia Bartoli were not chosen for their looks but for their vocal talent. However, thats not the only problem. The make-up people did a HORRENDUOUS job on the princes valet, Dandini, making him as ugly as possible. The step-sisters were worse...whos idea was it to make them wear flower pots on their heads!!! I thought that this was completely unnecessary. Even the lighting and sets were dark and ugly. Visually, the whole production was very poorly executed, although the singing was fine. This comic opera in and of itself is delightful, but I would much more highly recommend the 2006 Deutsche Gramophone DVD starring Frederica von Stade. The singing is just as beautiful, and the singers, sets, makeup and costumes are infinitely more so.

EDIT: The aforementioned opera movie was filmed in 1981 it was released on DVD in 2006.
    beautiful production, magnificent performances

I am a great fan of Cecilia Bartoli, and have been so, since this, her role as the title character, in Rossinis La Cenerentola. In my opinion, Bartoli is one of the most beautiful, dynamic and brilliant mezzo sopranos of our time. She has such a rich and beautiful tone, to her phrasing, as well as her general delivery of the songs in her repertoire.

This, the Houston Opera House production, is about as far away from Disneys Cinderella as you can get. So, before you consider seeing this operatic version of Cinderella, discount all of your preconceived notions. La Cenerentola (Cecilia Bartoli), is a beautiful, selfless and very mistreated young lady, who is regularly taken advantage of by her wicked stepfather and equally wicked stepsisters. The stepsisters (with father in tow) are invited to a the princes ball, where he will select the lucky lady who will become his wife. Of course, La Cenerentola is not allowed to attend the ball, and is expected to sit at home while her wicked family has all of the fun. However, fate has other plans. There isnt a fairy godmother in the picture, so much as a Philosopher, who is watching out for the poor girls best interest.

The cast is so strong here. Particularly notable is the great performance by Raul Gimenez (a great Chilean tenor, who plays the part of Don Ramiro, the romantic prince). You will laugh and maybe even shed a tear over this beautiful production. The music is absolutely soaring and lovely to listen to.
    Magnfica Cenerentola

Imprescindible.
Great singing with a little twitching thrown in
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :23
I love this video for the singing. As a matter of fact, I would recommend it over Bartolis Decca cd recording because the best principal singers are the same, except in this video, you get Raul Giminez as the Prince, instead of William Matteuzzi on the cd, and although Giminez voice is a bit lighter, its a prettier voice, and his fioratura is much more smooth and lovely. La Cenerentola is Bartoli at her finest vocally - it suits her sound and vocal style perfectly, but the acting is another matter. Bartoli is just not funny to me, plus she does alot of odd twitching and jerking that are terribly annoying.

Corbelli is great both vocally and as an actor. Giminez is enjoyable. Pertusi is fine. Dara gives me the same feeling as Bartoli - a bit too silly, but his singing is fine. There is a serious message to this opera that doesnt come across because of the ridiculousness of some of the acting and some of the costumes: The message is that goodness triumphs, which is the alternate title of this opera, and I personally feel this opera needs a handful of elegance and subtley (sorely lacking in this video) to convey that message in a witty way.

While this production looks (potentially) magical, theres no magic in the plot, just the singing. Get Disneys take out of your head and everything starts making sense. This is Bartolis signature role (note the book "Cinderella & Company") and she enjoys her feisty take on the girl. An excellent light entertainment for anyone who enjoys opera or the musical theater.

This extraordinarily powerful 1983 production may be the best-sung performance by Luciano Pavarotti on DVD, but when acting values are counted in, Ingvar Wixell manages to outshine the tenor star. Verdi gave the Duke two of Italian operas most brilliant arias ("Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"), but he gave the deformed jester Rigoletto a depth and complexity of character that is reflected in music of great variety and enormous emotional impact: the cruel mockery of the opening scene, the self-doubts inspired by his dialogue with Sparafucile, the paternal anxieties and final despair at his daughters sad fate, and the burning, self-destructive thirst for revenge. All these motives work their way into music of great dramatic richness, variety, and intensity. Wixell rises to its challenges, not only in the title role but in a cameo appearance as Rigolettos nemesis Monterone. I purchased this Rigoletto because most of the Amazon reviewers liked it. While I watched it, I was aware of the fine singing, but I was also aware that I was not getting involved. The reason was because, to me, the director, Jean-Pierre Ponnelles, hand was obvious. All the action was noticeably staged, giving the performance an air of artificiality. Why he had Rigoletto suspended in midair while moaning the abduction of his daughter, Gilda, to close the second act was jarringly ridiculous. The 3 stars are for the excellent singing

Upholding the ideals of wisdom, self-knowledge, courage and love of ones fellow man, he argued that the pursuit of virtue should be every individuals supreme goal. And, while following the Way, or the truth, might not result in immediate or material gain, Confucius showed that it could nevertheless bring its own powerful and lasting spiritual rewards.

I found this to be a fascinating book because it presents a perspective on social morality and the obligations constructed around having a family and a duty to the society you live in. Im not sure if the translation is as accurate as it could be and there were times where the subtlety of the subject matter escaped me, likely because Im not from china nor do I really have an accurate understanding of the culture in Confuciuss time, let alone present time. Still, I found this book fascinating because it presents a different perspective on social responsibility and morality toward the people we interact with. I highly recommend reading it as an opportunity to expand your horizons both culturally and for social responsibility.
    Nice philosophy

Its amazing how after so many years Confucius thoughts are still important. Here you can find the basis for most of the later philosophists, including some universal principles of most religions. Even though it is not easy to read, with a little effort is a book to enjoy.
    Nice Set-Up, Old Translation

While Penguin Classics paperbacks are generally some of the best on the market, the Analects themselves are, in this case, a bit out a date.

Better translations have been made, in my opinion. However, the prose itself is well-styled and clearly separated. Concise and easy to understand. The fluency of the book is what seems most troubling.

I have actually read The Analects before, as a student. Then, as now, I was attracted to a philosophy that did not hold out a reward of eternal salvation as the basis for establishing common morality. You should be a good person because it is effective and desirable. Nothing more. At one point in the Analects, Confucius mocks someone who wants to know about death when in his opinion the person knows nothing at all about life. I like that.

It is always interesting (at least to me) rereading something that I initially read many years ago and which has meant something serious to me on both readings. I am certainly better equipped to understand this now then I was 19 years ago. I am emotionally and intellectually better suited to appreciate the ideas. On the other hand, reading it as part of a class and as a student gave me what I am sure was a much better framework for placing the work against history and context. This was one of those books where I longed to take a class to go with the reading/digesting of the text. I am frustratingly sure that I have missed quite a bit, and that both background and discussion would have been useful.

The Introduction was actually rather helpful, in this case. D.C. Lau did a really able job of setting the stage for the reading. I had read Mencius two years ago and distinctly remember being frustrated by the introduction. I found it absolutely useless as a non-expert reader. I recognize that writing an introduction is rather a thankless job-- you either bore the experts or lose the newbies.

I am not certain whether the Lau introduction to the Penguin edition of The Analects would bore an expert, but this (relative) newbie certainly appreciated its assistance.

In the end, I appreciated this book in an almost physical way. It was like looking at a set of carvings. I took each paragraph out of the box, examined it, and returned it again. Some parts entranced me. Other bits I want to reconsider more later. Still other sections feel as though they will speak to a different me at a different point in my life.

It would be impossible for me not to recommend the reading experience, but is that valuable if I do so out of ignorance? A lovely book. I am not qualified to judge the translation, so I will not try.

(I am wondering if someone here can point me to a good text as to how this basic philosophy became the religion of Confucianism. Also: what Confucianism means as a religion rather than a philosophy.)

I, for one, liked the introductory comments

I guess, there is not much point in buying this book for the text of Lunyu itself: it is available in full on the Internet (for example at Wengu: http://afpc.asso.fr/wengu/wg/wengu.php?l=intro - in the Chinese original, two English - including Laus - and one French translation) but it is the introduction and adjoining commentaries that are of value. In this respect, I found D.C.Laus work quite pleasing. He explains the main terms and how they hang together, illustrates his arguments with quotations from the actual Analects and tries his best to relate Confucius philosophy to suitable analogues in the Western tradition. I am no China-expert, so this helped a lot. The book also has a post-script outlining Kong-zis life and a short piece on the individual disciples and friends that Confucius converses with in the book. I think there is $9 of value (or whatever the price) in this book.
